Lately, I’ve noticed house plants have been making a come back with their trendy foliage in many interior designs inspirations. There are many benefits of living with house plants. From adding a splash of greenery into your decor to purifying the air. We’ll go through some beneficial reasons why incorporating greenery into your home is beneficial for your overall health and the people around you as well.
Purifies the Air You Breathe
Since many of us spend several hours indoors, we’re exposed to higher amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2). Higher levels of CO2 make it harder to concentrate, think clearly, and make decisions. The oxygen generated by indoor plants, helps balance the levels of carbon dioxide in our bodies and our minds. Think of the reasons why people often need to step outside for a breather. The natural outdoors is naturally has more oxygen. Keeping plants in the home naturally helps
Plants Make you Happier
Who wouldn’t want to bring in the outdoors inside your home? Growing plants inside your home creates a sense of calm within your space. According to Texas A&M’s agricultural department, indoor plants increase levels of positive energy and help people feel secure and relaxed.
Keeping plants around the home and in the workplace greatly reduces a person’s stress levels. Natural aesthetic beauty is soothing to people, and keeping indoor plants around the home environment is an excellent way to lower levels of stress and anxiety. People who keep plants in their home feel happier, less stressed, and more relaxed. As a result of the positive energy they derive from the environment, the chances of suffering from stress-related depression are decreased as well.
Improves Memory & Concentration
A research study conducted at Exeter University in the U.K. found that indoor plants can improve concentration, productivity and staff well-being by 47%. They also discovered that plants can boost memory by up to 20%. Other studies even show that plants can boost a host of other cognitive skills such as creative thinking, spatial processing and more.
Natural Humidifiers
Keeping plants as an integral part of your home helps create and maintain moisture in the air throughout the year. According to Gardening Know How:
When the air is relatively dry, a plant acts almost like a straw. Dry air creates a “pull” that brings water from the soil into the roots, through the stems, and up to the leaves. From the leaves, the water evaporates into the air through pores called stomata. This process is called transpiration. Growing plants use transpiration to maintain a constant movement of water through the plant. Transpiration delivers water and associated nutrients up to the leaves, and it helps the plant cool down too.
So what type of plants help with humidity in the air? Nearly all plants add humidity in the air but some act as better humidifiers than others. In general, plants with large tropical leaves (think of plants that grow naturally in tropical regions like Florida and the Rainforest) will naturally add humidity in the home. However, plants that naturally live in
Adds Life to Interiors
Adding an extra layer of plant greenery can balance any room and add a finishing touch. Having plants in the home is aesthetically pleasing and can improve the overall ambiance of any room, by making it more friendly, calm and more natural. Indoor plants work particularly beautifully in trendy room designs like midcentury modern and modern layouts. In our mid-century modern home design, I like to use plants to soften the harsh edges of the geometric and modern elements of the home. I’ve found that the more lush and wild the layers of plants against straight geometric lines, really balance out my home and make it feel more welcome. Whether your home is midcentury or period, you can’t go wrong by adding plants as they naturally create a relaxing ambience with their presence alone.
